Editing Your Closet: Things I've Learned Along The Way

Where are all my small closet girls at!? I have grown up with a very small closet, and I currently have one now - so I feel like I have been trained in how to properly build and maintain a good solid closet system. This isn’t really about organization, but rather how to clean out your closet carefully and intentionally. For me, this usually occurs as a new season approaches, or if I am feeling particularly reckless. I don’t recommend reckless a closet clean out, though, because you might end up doing something you regret.* I have made poor choices in a rush, too, so sometimes it is smart to take a slower approach as you edit your wardrobe.
When you’re cleaning out your closet, try my golden rules! They are not really that original, but I’ve abided by them for YEARS as a small closet girl, and it has helped me keep my wardrobe sharp and nicely edited.
Golden Rules To Follow While You Edit Your Closet:
Consign or donate when possible.
Just because it’s old doesn’t mean you should toss it.*
Have a seasonal box and swap out every few months. I keep a bunch of storage containers handy for my seasonal clothes like my heavier sweaters or lightest summer dresses. Walmart is always my go-to for storage containers because they have the best deals on simple storage.
Keep a “maybe” box. Why not use this cute basket or this fabric-lined storage box?
Don’t wait for it to fit.
If you want to go even further, adopt a “one out, one in” system where every time you add something to your closet, you swap out something to be donated or consigned! Harder than it sounds, but it might be a good way to stay disciplined! A couple other tips - I keep my hats, belts, and shoes in my closet as well with the help of handy shelving and hooks. I use this jewelry box outside of my closet, and these cute velvet hangers for everything that is hanging. Pants, skirts, and shorts get folded.
