Burlap Bow DIY

Burlap: file it under one of my favorite things! Seriously! I love using it whenever I can in decor for a natural look, and added texture. It’s primitive yet timeless, and when applied to the correct color palette or pattern it can work magic! I decided to give it a go making a double-bow ribbon made of burlap for the nursery under a lamb’s ear wreath.

Materials:

  • 6 feet burlap ribbon, wired (I bought it at a nursery on our Massachusetts trip)

  • Scissors

  • Tacky Glue

  • Chip clips

  • Rubberband (or, preferably, florist’s wire)

  • Jute string (for tying to wreath)

The STEPS

Cut your strips

Measure out burlap and cut into three strips. The smaller two strips should be about 16” and 20”. Save the remaining burlap for the tail. Using tacky glue, form a loop and secure with chip clips. Allow a few hours to dry. You could also sew the burlap together to form the loops.

Stack The Loops

Using a small rubberband (I save mine from fresh produce), affix the two loops together, placing the smaller one on top.

cinch & center

Now that your two loops are adhered, cut a small segment from your tail (mine was a few inches). You’ll use this to cinch your loops into a bow formation.

tuck in the tail

The rubber band comes in handy here! Using the band, tuck in any frayed pieces from your center loop.

Weave in the tail (last large piece). Allow the ends to fan out, and fluff!

I like using wired burlap because you can fluff up the loops and make it look fuller.

cut v into ribbon

For extra flair, cut a V formation into the tails’ ends. Use a dab of tacky glue to prevent any fraying - burlap will definitely fray!

I tied the bow to this 22” faux lamb’s ear wreath using jute twine.

Ta da!!! I love how the ribbon turned out. I’ll be honest, I had spent days putting off this DIY because I didn’t think I had enough burlap. I would say that 6 feet was a perfect amount - I didn’t throw away a single inch! I hope this is a helpful DIY with clear steps, because this type of ribbon could seriously be used anywhere. It would make a great gift topper or adornment for any type of wall hanging decoration. The double bow adds a bit of extra oomphf too! A single loop would still look adorable if you’re low on material, but I recommend going for the extra :) Happy crafting!
