Salty Dogs
These pups were something I created last year, the first two of a collection I intended to call “Salty Dogs.” I painted these over a YEAR ago! Coming off a week at LBI, I was so inspired by all of the wet, shaggy dogs I saw on their beachside strolls with their families. Dogs that look kissed by the sea breeze and ocean mist. In other words, salty dogs.
Whenever I see people walking their dogs at the beach, I think to myself “that’s a salty dog.” Weird, maybe. To me, dogs at the beach go hand in hand. Two things I love, right!? But dogs have a history at sea, as mascots during war or companions during long voyages. Even in researching the history of dogs at sea, I was flabbergasted to find that the very place that inspired this series, is home to a very important salty dog. In Barnegat Light, NJ, where we have vacationed for years, there is a special location that honors Sinbad. Sinbad was a WWII mascot who served on the USS Campbell, during which time he won six service medals. Barnegat Light has a statue for Sinbad, and it is also the town of his final resting place.
For now, these are my first two salty dogs. I love painting dogs, whether it is for weddings, family gifts, or for fun like this. I think I know who my next canine subject will be, though…. :)
ciao! xo
